Today, we\u2019re sharing the origins of three Christmas traditions<\/strong> that are found on almost every Spanish table: nougat<\/strong>, lucky grapes<\/strong> and the Three Kings\u2019 rosc\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>

\ud83c\udf6f Nougat: a sweet with centuries of history<\/h3>

Nougat<\/strong> is probably Spain\u2019s most iconic Christmas sweet. Its origins go back to the Arab period, when desserts made with honey, almonds and egg white were already common. It appears in Valencian documents as early as the 15th century \u2014 and it\u2019s been part of our Christmas tables ever since. <\/p>

The most traditional varieties are Jijona<\/strong> (soft) and Alicante<\/strong> (hard), although today you\u2019ll find versions for every taste: chocolate, toasted egg yolk, coconut, truffle\u2026 What never changes is its starring role after Christmas meals.<\/p>

\ud83c\udf47 The 12 lucky grapes: a tradition born from a clever idea<\/h3>

Eating 12 grapes at midnight on New Year\u2019s Eve<\/strong> \u2014 one for each chime \u2014 is one of Spain\u2019s best-known traditions. But it\u2019s not as old as you might think. <\/p>

At the beginning of the 20th century, grape producers in eastern Spain faced an overproduction problem and launched a campaign to promote this new custom. It worked. Today, millions of people follow the ritual with excitement, superstition\u2026 and a few laughs when a grape goes down the wrong way. <\/p>

\ud83d\udc51 Rosc\u00f3n de Reyes: crowns, beans and surprises<\/h3>

The rosc\u00f3n de Reyes<\/strong> marks the end of Christmas \u2014 and it\u2019s also one of the most eagerly awaited treats. It\u2019s eaten on 6 January, the day of the Three Kings, and its circular shape symbolises eternity and the cycle of life. <\/p>

Inside the rosc\u00f3n you\u2019ll find two surprises: a small king figurine and a dried bean<\/strong>. Tradition says that whoever finds the figurine gets crowned\u2026 while whoever finds the bean pays for the rosc\u00f3n! <\/p>

Although today it\u2019s usually filled with cream and decorated with candied fruit, its origins lie in ancient Roman pagan celebrations. As you can see, what feels deeply ours actually comes from far away. <\/p>
